The first indications that point to today's town center come from the time of Moorish rule in Spain, whereas it is very likely that this region was settled as early as the Neolithic Age. A large number of Roman artefacts also indicate the work of the Romans. The Castilian knight El Cid finally managed to recapture the town in 1098. The oldest parts of the castle and the watchtowers also date from this period.
