The Piedras River is “responsible” for the creation of the well-known “bar” of El Rompido, forming an estuary rich in fauna and flora, where walking is a privilege for all those hikers who wish to explore this beautiful environment.

A small Huelva fishing village belonging to Cartaya. It has a protected strip of sand, a dune area of more than 12 kilometers in length that is part of the Marismas del Río Piedras y Flecha del Rompido Natural Area.

El Portil beach is one of the best known and most popular in the province of Huelva. Located between Punta Umbría and Cartaya, it is a sandy area about 4 kilometers long. Its location, at the mouth of the Odiel River and a stone's throw from the natural area of the El Portil Lagoon, makes it an ideal destination for nature lovers.

A freshwater lagoon, which preserves a high population of waterfowl and is one of the fundamental wetlands for the survival of birds that migrate to the Peninsula. The lagoon is surrounded by castanets, cattails and reeds.

The Natural Area extends to the mouth of the Piedras River, where the contributions of materials from the sea and the river, together with the influence of the tides, have given rise to a unique landscape. This place is made up of a system of marshes and a particular sandy formation of about ten kilometers, parallel to the coast and called El Rompido arrow.

The El Portil lagoon constitutes one of the most representative Huelva coastal wetlands and is in the best state of conservation, housing a community of fish of great interest. It is a practically circular route around the Laguna del Portil. It begins at the viewpoint located next to the coastal road HV-4112 from where it penetrates into the pine forest that surrounds the lagoon.
