The Cartagena Arsenal serves as the base for several units of the Spanish Navy and as a logistics hub for ships calling at Cartagena. It is one of Spain's oldest naval bases, founded in the 18th century. Construction of the Arsenal began in late 1731 and was completed in 1782 during the reign of Charles III. Impressively large and worth seeing, the Samson Crane is an industrial heritage of the city of Cartagena and stands as a monument in the large roundabout of the Paseo del Muelle de Santa Lucía. It was built in 1929 by the Unión Naval de Levante, S.A. on behalf of the state at the La Carraca shipyards in Cádiz, which earned it the popular name "La Gaditana," although its official name was Samson. From 1930 onwards, the Samson was used in Cartagena to unload the large Vickers guns intended for the artillery of the Castillitos and Cenizas batteries on the coast of Cartagena. In 1993, the Navy decommissioned the Samson Crane, and since 2001 it has stood as an industrial monument near the container terminal in the Port of Cartagena.
