On July 8, 1810, after landing on the Grande Chaloupe, a serious battle broke out between the French and the English. Both sides lost many men before the French surrendered. This mausoleum was only built in 1840 at the request of Nicole Robinet de Laserve, while the English expelled from the island were already honoring their dead with a mausoleum.
