Today owned by the Dordogne department, the castle recognized as a Major Site in Aquitaine and classified as a Historic Monument! It presents a set of buildings whose diversity and superposition of styles still testify to the past power of this family of valiant soldiers and powerful lords, firmly introduced into the immediate entourage of the Kings.

This town has a rich heritage. Judge for yourself: only 156 inhabitants, but no less than two medieval castles in the village, as well as a magnificent chapel called Saint-Christophe. Due to the proximity to the prehistoric site of Combe-Capelle, every summer a series of conferences known as the Couze valley are held in the village, on the subject of the latest finds from this important prehistoric site. The greatest discovery was the unearthing in 1909 of a human skeleton called the “Combe-Capelle Man”. In 2011, the discovery of a Neanderthal smoosher renewed interest in the site.

This magnificent castle is open to visitors. In summer you will find many activities there, even including night markets within its walls. It is located on a hill and has defensive constructions. It is a fine example of a castle. Like most castles in France, numerous architectural transformations have taken place over the centuries. All year round, magnificent works of art are exhibited in the large rooms. One of the owners of this castle, Charles de Biron, met a rather tragic end because suspected of plotting against King Henry 4, he was beheaded in the courtyard of the Bastille prison castle in Paris in the 17th century.
