Rivers and canals run through the country, and the latter in particular were a very important part of the transport infrastructure in earlier times. Later, first the railways and then again later trucks took over the task of transporting goods. When building the artificial waterways, however, it had to be taken into account that differences in height always had to be overcome, and so locks are often lined up along the canals - at greater or lesser intervals, depending on the local situation. Shipping was only possible with their help.

One of the central squares in Nantes. The fountain is worth seeing, as are the surrounding buildings, but somehow it doesn't really have any charm - the square is probably just a little too big and the surrounding houses a little too monotonous.
