A towpath, or "chemin de halage," which runs alongside the river or canal, was an indispensable part of the transportation infrastructure in earlier times. Before ships could be propelled by motors, horses walked along the bank, pulling the vessel against the current. This was called "treideln," and that's how towpaths got their name, which has been passed down to this day. Where these paths, located directly on the riverbank, have been preserved, they are popular with hikers and cyclists.

At the gateway to the French Gâtinais, the Vives Eaux dam opposes the course of the Seine to guarantee a level necessary for river navigation. By taking its wooden footbridge, you can see the waters of the river pouring forcefully into a beautiful open landscape.

Saint-Fargeau-Ponthierry is a town of 14,000 inhabitants bathed by the Seine. It is served by the RER D (Corbeil-Essonnes to Montereau) and has a generous offer of shops in its city center. The city is famous for being the start of the GR 32 which connects the Seine to the Loire. It is also crossed by the way of Sens which belongs to the network of the ways of Compostelle.

This spring water dam has a footbridge where you can admire the passage of water, the river that continues on its way and the nature around. If you wish, the docks provide an ideal setting for a picnic. A corner for supplies or a nap not to be overlooked!
