A truly remarkable fountain—not the only one in Obernai—restored in 2009.... 8 m deep with a water depth of 4 m.

The six-bucket fountain in Renaissance style (1579) consists of three central columns supporting a canopy with excerpts from the New Testament.

I found it interesting that the old town was surrounded by a double fortress wall. The inner, 1,400-meter-long ring wall was intended to have approximately 20 towers and four gates. The wide earthen rampart now serves as a walking path.

Beautiful view over the vineyards into the valley with the Kronenbourg Brewery in the foreground. Built in 1969, the Obernai Brewery is the largest brewery in France, covering over 70 hectares. Approximately 700 to 800 employees work at this brewery, which is one of the largest in Europe and the market leader in France. Kronenbourg produces almost 10 million hectoliters of beer per year. Since April 2008, Kronenbourg has been a subsidiary of Carlsberg following its acquisition of Scottish & Newcastle.

The 1,400-meter-long inner wall of the old town was equipped with around twenty towers and four gates. The wide path along the fortifications is now used as a promenade. Here, you can take a peaceful stroll along the old city wall and sit on a bench in the shade of the large trees and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Not only does this offer a magnificent view, but there's also a remarkable historic wayside shrine near the vineyards directly along the path. This shrine was once part of a Stations of the Cross from Obernai to the Bischenberg Abbey and dates back to 1712. Wayside shrines are common religious monuments in Alsace. They were mostly erected in the 16th and 17th centuries, but they became less common from the 18th century onwards, when crosses were preferred.
