On September 19, 1846, the Virgin appeared to two young shepherds, Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud, in La Salette, in Isère. The chapel of Veyssilieu was built at the top of the "mountain of Chatelan" in 1866, following a wish from the parish priest who promised the Virgin to build a chapel for her if she protected her parishioners from cholera. The modest building was blessed in 1867. On this occasion, the group sculpted in polychrome plaster, placed in the niche above the altar, was transported with great pomp.
