On September 19, 1846, the Virgin appeared to two young shepherds, Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud, in La Salette, in Isère. The cult of Notre-Dame de la Salette then spread rapidly across the Dauphiné. The chapel of Veyssilieu was built at the top of the "mountain of Chatelan" in 1866, following a wish from the parish priest who promised the Virgin to build a chapel for her if she protected her parishioners from cholera.
