1926년부터 수도원 교회는 교황의 명예 칭호인 바실리카 미노르를 보유하고 있습니다. 원래 후기 고딕 양식으로 지어졌던 내부는 여러 차례 개조되었으며, 1900년에서 1934년 사이에 신고전주의 양식으로 꾸며지고 그려졌습니다. 합창단 끝에 있는 프랑스 왕 루이 14세가 선물한 장엄한 주 제단은 1680년에 봉헌되었습니다.

The Mariastein monastery is considered the second most important pilgrimage site in Switzerland after Einsiedeln. Its origins go back to a legend in which a little boy fell over a high rock face and was then found unharmed by his mother. After he told his father that he had been caught by a woman, the father was sure that it was the Virgin Mary. He had a chapel built in a cave in her honor. Located in the south of Alsace, the Petite Camargue Alsatienne is the oldest nature reserve in the region. It’s also the biggest! Created in 1982, the objective was to preserve the wetlands formed by the flooding of the Rhine and to raise public awareness of nature protection. Today, it is the ideal place for observing fauna and flora: there are no less than 40 species of trees, 180 of birds, 16 of amphibians, 40 of dragonflies...

Cycling along the shipping canal is wonderful, as the path directly on the river bank is perfectly flat and car-free. The crossing to the other side of the Grand Canal is in a northerly direction at the lock and the hydroelectric power station in Kembs.

The Mariastein monastery is, alongside the Einsiedeln monastery, the second most visited pilgrimage site in Switzerland. Thousands of believers and pilgrims from all over the world make a pilgrimage to Mariastein every year to ask Mary for help or to receive her blessing. Of course, the impressive monastery complex and the surrounding lands attract numerous tourists and hikers every year, who bring home a wealth of memories with a suitcase or backpack, but also a full photo or cell phone memory card. A detour to the gift chapel hidden in a rock grotto and the magnificent basilica is particularly recommended. If you visit Mariastein, you should also, if possible, pay a visit to the nearby castle ruins of Château Landskron in Alsace, just a few minutes' walk away.
