THE LINGEKOPF. AN EXTRAORDINARY MEMORIAL OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR IN ALSACE On July 20, 1915, a short but bloody battle began that lasted only three months but claimed the lives of nearly 20,000 young Germans and French, with the aim of conquering the heights of the Lingekopf in the Vosges Mountains. The Memorial du Linge revives this tragedy. Visitors are first shown a short film explaining the geopolitical background of this battle. This is followed by a visit to a museum that is generally considered an authentic witness to the mountain fighting. Concluding the tour is a tour of the very well-preserved German trenches. The shelters and battle stations, which still exist today, allow visitors to step back into that era and imagine what the soldiers must have experienced during those months. The Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Annonciation in Trois-Épis is a modernist pilgrimage site built in 1968 on the site of a centuries-old Marian devotion.
