About 25 kilometers south of Strasbourg lies Erstein—also known as the sugar town of Alsace. Anyone who drinks a cappuccino or coffee here or elsewhere will usually be handed a packet of sugar from Erstein. No wonder, since the small town is home to one of the most famous sugar factories in the region. The municipality of Erstein is part of the large natural region of the central Ried in Alsace, and in particular, the Ried der Ill around the city center.

At 8 kilometers long, Lake Plobsheim, located between Strasbourg and Erstein, is the largest artificial lake in the department. This clear and shallow reservoir (3 meters on average) covers the area of the former alluvial forest along the Rhine and is home to lush flora. Various fish species thrive here (such as roach, tench, perch, catfish, and pike), and many migratory waterfowl settle here in winter. Its biodiversity and, in particular, its role as a wintering ground for waterfowl make it unique in Europe. An average of 13,000 individuals are recorded during censuses; this area is therefore home to the largest bird population observed in winter on the Rhine. More than fifteen rare species also live here. Today, birds share this area with sailboats, as the water also houses a water sports facility, popular with sailing enthusiasts.

Located 20 km south of Strasbourg, amidst rivers, meadows, and forests, the Pays d'Erstein offers a wide range of activities: hikes through the town and the forest, on foot, by bike, or in a flat-bottomed boat. The old town boasts beautiful medieval architecture typical of the region. The former tanner's house, with its rich half-timbering, was built in the 18th century and is classified as a historical monument.

Erstain is a pretty town in Alsace, well known above all for its sugar factory (producing sugar from beets).
