It is the only windmill in Montmartre still in operation, of the 30 that once existed on Montmartre Hill. In 1812, a Mr. Debray, a miller by trade and owner of the Blute-Fin and Radet windmills, decided to open a tavern on the ground floor to sell galettes made with rye flour, from the mill to the plate. In 1834, following the trend, the premises were converted into an open-air restaurant with a dance floor. It had its moment of glory when Renoir painted "The Dance at the Galette Mill," a copy of which can be seen at the entrance. In 1978, the mill was restored and declared a historic monument. It has now housed a restaurant since the 1980s.
