1월 30, 2026, Petit château du Meisenbach
Although the few remaining ruins of this structure are called a castle, it appears that the site was first used as a Roman temple and then as a Christian church. Nearby are superb rock formations typical of the Northern Vosges Mountains.

Accessible from various directions and/or accessible as a circular walk. The walk up the mountain is quite long.

At this spot, in the forest northeast of Lviv, the trees give way slightly, creating a clearing where, at an altitude of 420 meters, stands the small sacred monument known as the "Croix Saint-Hubert." A low stone wall and a wooden fence create a small "sacred precinct," at the center of which is the well-preserved cross. At the very bottom of the lower section is the well-known scene from the Life of Hubertus, featuring a stag with a cross between its antlers. Above it, reliefs of two figures are depicted, the one on the left identified as a monk with his tonsure and habit. Between the two images, the year 1786 is inscribed. Above this, the actual cross, which also bears the body of the crucified Christ, rises.

Ste-Vérène (German: St. Verena) is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage chapel near the village of Enchenberg in Lorraine. The chapel plays a significant role in the religious life of the Bitche region. It was listed as a historical monument in 1996. Its preservation is overseen by the Association for the Preservation of the Chapel of Sainte-Vérène. The chapel was built in the 15th century and enlarged in 1685. However, four construction periods are evident in the building. The simple Romanesque choir windows suggest an even older predecessor from the early Middle Ages. A window and door from the late Gothic period are considered architectural masterpieces. Two Renaissance-style gable windows on the west side date from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. The entrance to the chapel is in a naive Baroque style. The terracotta Virgin Mary also dates from this period. The choir, made of large, plastered sandstone blocks, creates an unusual scene with its Gothic arches. The old altar disappeared around 1960 and resurfaced damaged in November 1991. It has now returned to its place in the chapel. It is said to be a work by Johann Martersteck, a master from Bouquenom. The attribution can be considered relatively certain due to its strong similarity to the Rahling retable, which was also by Martersteck. The old, richly painted church windows disappeared around 1960. They were only replaced in 2000 by figurative paintings by the artist Sauveur Pasqual. The gable window depicts Saint Verena with her insignia of jug and comb. Next to it, Saint Maurice is depicted with a red flag and a broken sword. A Gothic window depicts Saints Ursus and Victor, martyrs of the Theban Legion like Maurice. Adjacent to the chapel is a Lourdes Grotto, built in 1958 to celebrate the centenary of the miracles of Lourdes. About 100 meters below the chapel rises a spring with very soft water, which may have contributed to the choice of the site and served to supply the hermits living there. It has also been used by the residents of Enchenberg since ancient times as a washing place. Source: Wikipedia

The remains are not the ruins of a small castle, as the popular name might suggest, but rather the remains of a Roman or Gallo-Roman sanctuary from the 2nd century, with a second phase of use in the 4th century. It may have later been used as a Christian church. In Curt Mündel's guide to the Vosges Mountains (1911 edition), the ruins are referred to as "Meisenbacher Schlössel," and the rock below as "Ochsenstall" (Oxen Stable), probably because the rock overhang was formerly used as a shelter for cattle.

The Ochsenstall Rock offers an exhilarating mountain biking experience with its rugged terrain and steep slopes. The highlight of your ride is the Ochsenstall Cave, an intriguing little cavern located beneath the rock formations. This cave, carved out by natural forces, offers a moment of exploration and a unique view of the surrounding landscape. It is the perfect place to take a break.

Beautiful wayside cross with a bench opposite. I liked to take a break here. Almost at the highest point of my tour. See also: https://www.club-vosgien-lemberg.net/wordpress/?page_id=178

The shelter was probably also used as an ox stable. There is a covered bench there.

Wikipedia The Twelve Apostles Stone (French: Pierre des douze Apôtres; also Breitenstein, Latin: Petra lata) is a prehistoric menhir on the connecting road between Meisenthal, Mouterhouse (both in the Moselle department) and Wingen-sur-Moder (Bas-Rhin department) in the Northern Vosges Nature Park (Parc Naturel Régional des Vosges du Nord). Since the Middle Ages it has formed a border marker between Alsace and Lorraine. The monolith, carved from a single block of red sandstone, is about four meters high. Its history is unclear. It is believed that it is a cult stone from the Celtic ("druidic") period. In 1787 the upper part was designed as a crucifixion group (the crucified Christ with two Marys). A simple relief with the twelve apostles was carved out below.

To the gods next to the chapel: The Virgin Mary depicted and venerated here is that of Lourdes. This well-known Marian pilgrimage site is located in the French Pyrenees and is visited by a large number of people every year, including many sick people hoping for healing. The devotional image of the Mother of God has spread widely, not only in France, and believers have built Lourdes chapels and grottos everywhere. The ecclesiastical memorial day "Our Lady of Lourdes" is on February 11th, this is the anniversary of the apparition of Mary (1858), when the Mother of God appeared to the 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous in a rock grotto not far from Lourdes. Bernadette later became a nun and died at the age of only 35. On December 8 (the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary) 1933, she was canonized by Pope Pius XI. The commemoration of the Lourdes Madonna is also World Day of the Sick.

Beautiful sandstone formation. There are more or less 3 large rooms that offer protection from rain. in the middle there is a bench. One of the rooms leads deep enough into the rock that it cannot be seen from the outside.

The name of the Ochsenstall rock, which means ox stable, is a riddle because none of the cavities are large enough to house oxen. According to oral tradition, this place would have served as a place of rest and shelter for herdsmen who led the animals to pastures or for pig breeders, while the animals feasted on acorns.
