Carroz means "crossroads", "crossroads" or "scree", "stony place" (of Celtic origin kaer), stone, rock (pre-Indo-European Mediterranean root: kal/kar)[ref. desired]. The inhabitants of the commune are given funny nicknames: “Catelus” for the inhabitants of Arâches, “Angorins” for those of Frasse.[ref. necessary] Located at an altitude of 1,140 m, the resort defines itself as an “authentic village resort in the heart of the Alps”. It is located 55 km from Chamonix and 40 km from Geneva on a largely sunny plateau above the Arve valley, and is part of the Grand Massif (Flaine, Les Carroz d'Arâches, Morillon, Samoëns and Sixt- Horseshoe). This area offers access to 265 km of slopes, with the summit of the ski area peaking at 2,500 m. 80 ski lifts serve 135 slopes (14 black, 50 red, 54 blue and 17 green).
