The existence of this fortified castle is mentioned as early as the 12th century. It is believed to have been built on an even older fortress. In 1764, the Château de Saint-Alban was requisitioned as headquarters to organize raids aimed at eliminating the Beast of Gévaudan.

This forest is part of the Way of St. James "Via Podiensis", which begins in Le-Puy-en-Velay. You reach or walk through it on the third stage (counting according to "Rother"), which leads from Saugues over more than 30 kilometers to Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole.

peaceful and sumptuous place on the way to Compostela at the beginning of September I obtained authorization to bivouac at the back of the building, it's an unforgettable memory!

This stopover gîte located on the crests of the Margeride is the perfect stopover in these fairly isolated places. Besides, there are no housing alternatives other than this one, except the bivouac.

An old stone shelter standing alongside a small chapel, ideal for getting out of the elements or a spot to grab a snack, although it isn't set up for sleeping in. There is a fountain with drinkable water and toilets just a few metres away.

Up on this 1,300-metre (3,280 ft) high plateau, the gravel tracks are smooth and fast rolling, spanning out across the landscape, the views far reaching on a clear day. The subtle contours and open terrain give little indication of how high you are, only the morning chill gives it away.
