Aumont-Aubrac is located in the Lozère department on the Aubrac plateau and is one of the charming stopping points on the Way of St. James, the Via Podiensis. The village captivates with its narrow streets, traditional granite houses, and a remarkable church. Pilgrims and hikers appreciate the warm atmosphere and the numerous accommodations. Aumont-Aubrac is known for its culinary specialties featuring Aubrac beef. The surrounding landscape of meadows, forests, and expansive plateaus invites hikes and makes the village an ideal starting point for nature lovers.

The feeling that dominates the most here is space, nature.

The village of Aumont-Aubrac is home to the Saint-Etienne church with a mix of Romanesque and Baroque styles. Mentioned as early as 1106, it is today an essential stopover for shell hikers. Remodeled during the 19th century, the church retains a trace of each period of its construction. The apse is the oldest part while the nave seems to predate the 14th century. It has a square bell tower ending in a spire, raised in 1809 with stones from the cemetery. Its pointed arched south portal is one of the most remarkable in the region. Its granite rubble facade is typical of local architecture. If the architecture remains sober and typical of the Romanesque style, the decoration lets its contemporaneity shine through. The magnificent stained glass windows dated 1967 are the work of a contemporary artist named Ménard. In its nave, at the entrance to the south chapel, is a superb painting representing the Virgin carrying the Child and the young John the Baptist.

Saint Stephen “Saint-ETIENNE” is one of the seven first deacons of the early Jerusalem community and is also the first martyr (martyr) of early Christianity. The church remembers him on Boxing Day, December 26th. When Stephen uttered aloud his vision of the open heaven, "And being filled with the Holy Spirit, he looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God" (Acts chapter 7 verse 55), the people were so indignant that that they drove him out of the city and stoned him.

Aumont-Aubrac has many stories relating to the Beast of Gévaudan. This ferocious beast is at the origin of a series of attacks against humans that occurred between 1764 and 1767 in Gévaudan in Lozère. The legend remains intact. Still, a beautiful weather vane representing the animal is located in the city center. If you are a lover of good food, then I recommend that you reserve a table at chef Cyril Attrazic's Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant. You will have the choice between a starred restaurant, but in the same establishment, the chef also runs a brasserie and a bistro. There is something for all budgets. It's quite unexpected to find such gastronomic diversity in such a small village. Aumont-Aubrac is also one of the key places in Lozère to taste this extraordinary dish that is aligot (mashed potatoes mixed with fresh tomme cheese).

If you have previously - coming from the German Eifel - made a pilgrimage via Metz, Cluny and Dijon to Le Puy en Velay and now continue here via the southern foothills of the Central Massif, a completely different landscape is revealed once again.

“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what motivated people to erect“ their ”cross at this point. (...) These crossroads were erected as visible signs and attract the eyes of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who overcame death (...). The cross is part of our life, just as it was part of the life of Jesus. So I hope that many people ... visit the crossroads, whether as places of silence and breathing before God, whether as places of congregation meeting, prayer and praise of God. " (Text source: Dean Rainald M. Ollig in: “Crossroads. Small sacred monuments as a sign of popular piety ")

The church of Saint-Étienne d'Aumont d'Aubrac was part of a former Benedictine priory founded in the 11th century by the powerful barons of Peyre. It combines the solidity of Roman architecture with the lightness of the arched windows with richly decorated leaded panes.

La Chaze-de-Peyre formerly belonged to the domain of the Barons of Peyre (11th - 14th century). Some other places in the region also bear the affix "de Peyre", which testifies to their former membership. In the village, pilgrims will find drinking water and toilets.

The pilgrimage takes place on gravel country lanes, on which the farmers also go for their pastures and their herds. Pastures, strips of forest and panoramic views with horizons 30 km away alternate cheerfully; it reminds us of the Black Forest. The hamlets nestle in the hollows of small valleys to brave the harsh and windless winters. The houses are built of hewn granite stone and covered with coarse slate. Most of them are over 200 years old, still look good, and are probably built to last.

AUBRAC is oriented towards pastoralism. The lowland areas have all been converted to grasslands; trees are only found in small groups, mainly on steep and rocky areas.
