About twenty windmills once stood on the summit of the Kasselberg. The last mill caught fire on October 30, 1911, a fire visible from far and wide. In 1947, the Ruytoor mill in Arneke was purchased by the local Syndicat d'Initiative and opened to the public on July 14, 1949. The mill has two distinct functions: it serves as a corn mill, producing organic flour. An electrical unit serves as an oil mill, producing both rapeseed oil and linseed oil. Near the mill is an orientation table and a statue of Maréchal Foch.

The Cassel mill is located at the top of Mount Cassel, in a place called the castle terrace. It is an authentic stopover during your stay in Nord-Pas de Calais. There were once about twenty mills (wooden on pivots) on Mont Cassel, but they all gradually disappeared... In 1949, Cassel bought an old mill that had fallen into ruins in a neighbouring municipality, restored it and placed it in the public garden of Mont. It is called Kasteel Meulen.

The equestrian statue of Marshal Foch. His statue was placed here because he chose Cassel as his command post in 1914-'15. During that period he coordinated the allied armies. The statue was inaugurated in 1928, one year later he died.

The Kasselberg (French: Mont Cassel) is a witness hill in the French Westhoek, in the French department of Noord. The hill is the highest in the Westhoek with 176 meters. The city of Kassel is located on top of the hill. The Kasselberg is part of the so-called central hill ridge in the West Flemish Hills, which also consists of the Watenberg, Wouwenberg, Katsberg, Boeschepeberg, Kokereelberg, Zwarteberg, Vidaigneberg, Baneberg, Rodeberg, Sulferberg, Goeberg, Scherpenberg, Monteberg, Kemmelberg and Letteberg. To the south of this hill ridge is the catchment area of the Leie, to the north of this hill ridge is the catchment area of the IJzer.

Cassel is a fortified town on top of a hill and not far from the Belgian border with Poperinge (20 km). Beautiful views, cozy alleys, unique estaminets and a richly furnished museum in a historic mansion. This is in short what Cassel brings you, once you have conquered the slope from whichever side. A lot of variety with a bit of history and culture, a lot of nature and local gastronomy. Enjoyment is the motto. Highlights are there for the taking in Cassel. For some, the Musée de Flandre will be the top attraction, for others the estaminets and still others just come for the cobblestone climb. Enjoy Cassel.

The Remparts de Cassel are the historic fortifications that surround the charming town of Cassel, perched high on Mont Cassel in French Flanders. These ancient ramparts bear witness to the region’s rich and tumultuous history and offer visitors a fascinating glimpse into the past. Cassel’s elevated position on Mont Cassel, one of the highest points in the area, made it a strategically important stronghold for a long time. It offered excellent views over the Flemish plain, making it ideal for defensive purposes. The first fortifications date back to the Middle Ages, when walls and gates were built to protect the town from invasions and sieges. Cassel was often the scene of military confrontations due to its strategic importance. In the 17th century, the famous French military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban strengthened the fortifications of Cassel. Although not as extensive as his other projects, these improvements helped to strengthen the town.
