The building, which was constructed as a state museum between 1981 and 1990 according to plans by Gottfried Böhm and Nikolaus Rosiny, is now home to the Saar Historical Museum. It was built in the context of the reconstruction of the castle by the same architects. Accompanying the south wing of the castle, it stands as an independent sculpture facing the street at the edge of the sandstone plinth in which the underground collection room is located. Together with the castle's central projection and the fountain, the museum forms a design unit that clearly bears Böhm's signature.
