Italian-French border, you can get there by pushing the mountain bike the last 50/100 meters of DSL

The bunker and barracks near Le Lavoir are part of the so-called Alpine Maginot Line, built in the 1930s to protect against an invasion from Italy. There was indeed an Italian attack up around the Col de Vallée Etroite in June 1940, but it was repelled.

Beautiful scenery, both the climb and the descent on gravel are a bit challenging. A bit of portage on the climbs and also at least 1km of walking on the descents.

Undoubtedly, the scenery is magnificent, since the Rho valley begins at the col at more than 2,500 meters and descends to 1,300 meters from Bardonecchia, always surrounded by a line of spectacular rocky mountains. Especially on the western slope, we will always advance along the crest of the Rei Magi, a mountain range that groups together different peaks such as Punta Melchiorre (2,949 m.), Punta Baldassarre (3,164 m.), Roca Bernauda (3,226 m.) or the Cima della Planette (3,102 m.) The entire ridge is spectacular, with walls that drop hundreds of meters. This ridge separates the valley through which we will climb, that of the Rho, from the Stretta valley, and precisely the ridge line also marks the border between the two states.

Valfréjus is a winter sports resort open since 1983. Located on the heights of Modane, the city has a wide range of shops, from accommodation to restaurants. In summer, be careful all the same because the resort is idling and many of its businesses wait until winter to open.

An alpine pass on the Italian-French border, reachable from Bardonecchia with an easy walk if you take the military road, but 3 and a half hours long. But it's worth it, spectacular place!
