The Col de Guéry, located in the heart of the Auvergne region, offers a picturesque mountain pass experience amidst the volcanic landscapes of the Massif Central. At an altitude of approximately 1,267 metres, the pass offers stunning views of Lake Guéry below, the highest lake in Auvergne. The region is known for its tranquil beauty, with rolling meadows, dramatic volcanic peaks and forests that change colour with the seasons. Nearby Roche Sanadoire and Roche Tuilière add to the spectacular scenery, making it a perfect stop on your hike.

View of the Roche Tuilière (left) and the Roche Sanadoire. The two "guardians" of the Lac du Guery belong to the volcanic massif of the Aiguillier, whose activity period was between 2.2 and 1.8 million years ago. "Lauze" was mined at the Roche Tuilière until the middle of the 20th century. The ballast columns, which were formed by the slow cooling of the lava, crumble into thin, regular plates, the "lauzes". These plates were used to cover roofs instead of tiles (tuiles). This is where the rock got its name.

The Banne d'Ordanche is a 1515 m high volcanic peak in the shape of a neck-shaped crater head. It solidified about 2 million years ago before being planed down by glaciers (https://www.sancy.com/) The views in all directions are phenomenal and the summit is easy to reach - the last part is comfortably via wooden stairs. Due to several nearby car parks, you are rarely alone here in good weather.

At just over 1480m, the Puy Loup offers a great view in all directions. There is a viewing platform from which you can have a beautiful view of the waterfall. The 'Ruisseau des Morts du Guéry' drains a large part of the plateau du Guéry. This waterfall can be impressive. It is also the main tributary of the Lac du Guéry.

A great discovery by chance on a road of the passes planned towards Nice via Ventoux. First pass to stretch your legs. Easy with a plus at the end. A magnificent climb especially towards the end in parts with hairpin bends with this "sugar loaf" in sight...". Absolutely to do...

La Banne d'Ordanche is a peak of volcanic origin in the Dore Mountains in the Puy-de-Dôme department. It culminates at an altitude of 1,512 m and overlooks the town of La Bourboule. Easily accessible from the Col de Guéry, there is a wonderful 360° panoramic view (orientation table above) of the Puys chain, the Puy de Sancy, but also of the Cantal mountains. Source: Wikipedia
