La Sauvetat is a name that comes from the Latin word "salvare", which means "to save". It was given to several places in France that were fortified or protected by a religious order, such as the Knights Hospitaller or the Templars. La Sauvetat, in the Puy-de-Dôme department, is one of these places, whose history dates back to the 12th century. It was a commandery of the Knights Hospitaller who built a castle, a church and a hospital there. You can still see some of these buildings today, as well as the medieval bridge that spans the Morge.

The oppidum of Corent is considered the Arverne capital. It is now an archaeological site highlighted by the department.

The south-west of the plateau offers pretty views of the Puys chain.
