Here, in La Cambe, is the largest German military cemetery in Normandy. What always amazes me is that German military cemeteries abroad are better maintained than those in Germany.

La Cambe is the largest German military cemetery in Normandy and was designed by architect Robert Tischler. One of his design principles is a narrow entrance, allowing only one person to enter the cemetery at a time. Tischler's goal was to bring people peace and quiet when entering the monument. Communal graves and the almost six-metre-high burial mound form the center of the site. Instead of individual crosses as grave markers, there are groups of symbolic crosses without names. Currently, 21,245 German soldiers have found their resting place in La Cambe. The burial mound contains the remains of 207 unknown and 89 known dead
