Unfortunately, I couldn't capture it well on camera, but this stretch of road could easily be on the North Sea. The absolutely chic houses, the dike, which is great for cycling, the vastness... If the Wümme River roared a bit more like the North Sea, it would be perfect! 👍

The two-hectare, privately owned Neuenkoop Arboretum is located in the Bernese district of Neuenkoop in the Wesermarsch district of Lower Saxony. The arboretum is situated on the edge of the Delmenhorst Geest, on marsh and moorland soils with sandy islands in a former floodplain of the Weser, Hunte, and Berne rivers. In addition to a 750-strong collection of oaks, maples, chestnuts, magnolias, lilacs, and rhododendrons, the Neuenkoop Arboretum is home to a variety of subtropical woody plants, including eucalyptus, evergreen magnolias, camellias, hemp palms, silk trees, Mediterranean cypresses, and figs.

There is evidence of settlement at one site from at least the pre-Roman Iron Age until the 6th century. With the development of the Weser Marsh by the Stedingers, the first church was built here; according to a chronicle from 1618, it was built in 1057. Later, it was replaced by a single-nave Romanesque church made of sandstone from the Upper Weser. The masonry of this church is still preserved in the north wall and tower. A relatively good bike path runs along the road by the dike. During rush hour, I'd prefer the bike path, but otherwise, I'd rather take the road (even though that's not legally permitted, as it's a mandatory bike path).

St. Mary's Church, a former sailors' church. This small church in the North German Brick Gothic style was built between 1417 and 1425. It consists of a short, single-aisled nave with a gable roof and a recessed choir with a 5/8-window end and original pointed arch window. The remains of the former Cistercian monastery are worth a visit. The museum is small but nice. Opening times from O to O - East to October.
