In the center of Lauchröden

The Protestant St. Catherine's Church in Gerstungen is a castle church and has a striking hexagonal church tower with a pointed roof. The two upper stories are half-timbered. The nave was restored in 1588 after a fire.

Of the three city gates of Berka a.d. Werra, only the lower gate remains.

Beautifully landscaped lake

Berka had three city gates but no city wall. One of these is the well-preserved Lower Gate.

The choir tower church is dedicated to Saint Margaret. Her face smiles down from the keystone in the choir vault. The late Gothic choir is the oldest part of the church. The nave was extended in 1613 and 1676. Around 1700, the church received its richly decorated Baroque pulpit. The simple galleries date from the 19th century, as does the valuable organ by Peternell. The focus of attention is on the altarpiece from 1510. Reliefs expressively narrate the Passion of Christ. The main panel in the center depicts the Crucifixion. The left wing shows Christ on the Mount of Olives and carrying the cross. The right wing depicts the Lamentation and Resurrection. The altarpiece testifies to the pre-Reformation piety of the church. The figures engage the viewer with eye contact. The robes imitate the fashion of the time. Thus, the biblical story took on a connection with the present-day churchgoers who witnessed the Passion of Christ. Contemplating the suffering of Christ served the salvation of souls. The Gothic appearance of St. Martin, the Protestant church of Lauchröden, somewhat conceals its true age - built in the second half of the 12th century and thus still of Romanesque origin.
