The town is located about halfway between Dole in the north and Bourg-en-Bresse in the south. The Vallière river flows through it, but it is largely underground to reduce the risk of flooding. Lons-le-Saunier is home to the famous processed cheese "La vache qui rit" (The Laughing Cow). Wine has also been grown in the area since the Middle Ages; the vines in the town belong to the Jura wine-growing region. (Wikipedia)
