Former Saint Vincent Cathedral The history of this Gothic jewel, whose past size (length 74 m, vault height 25 m, transept diameter 6-7 m) is unimaginable, was very eventful. On the site of a cathedral from the 6th century, it was repeatedly rebuilt between the 7th and 13th centuries. Although major damage occurred in the 16th century, it was not until the beginning of the 17th century that restoration work was undertaken, primarily affecting the towers. But the structure, which has suffered greatly from repeated construction work, is a cause for serious concern. Eventually the church was sold as state property and demolition began in March 1799. Only the narthex, the two towers and the yoke, the oldest parts of the church, remain to this day. The square base of the towers probably dates from the 11th century and the octagonal upper part from the 13th century. Worth mentioning is the tympanum of the portal, whose sculptures depict scenes of the Last Judgment.

Built between 1490 and 1510, the Maison de Bois is undoubtedly the oldest house in Macon, and most certainly the most famous. Its façade, entirely built of wood, is decorated with a multitude of statues, often of a greedy inspiration. Characters with masks of men and monkeys more or less grimacing, they are standing, sitting, winged, naked or sometimes dressed only in a scarf or a cap. Some, with their outstretched arms, alternately hold the head and tail of a fantastic animal to the real. The Maison de Bois was compared, by the Goncourt brothers, to a gigantic wooden chest that the Mâconnais should only look at as a glimpse, because of the colorful sculptures that adorn its walls. http://www.macon-tourism.com/uk/visit-macon/289/Maison-de-Bois

It is one of the oldest surviving wooden houses from the 15th century. Every maconnais returns once a day (Dumont travel guide). Very nice floor tiles. And the staff is super friendly - there was a dry place for the bike during the stop during the rain.

The city's largest church, 75 meters long, 30 meters wide, and with 53-meter-high towers, is in the neo-Romanesque style. It was built between 1859 and 1865 according to plans by André Berthier, and its construction was decided upon by the municipality.
