A lovely bridge to reach Villefranche-sur-Saône from Beauregard, accessible only on foot or by bicycle.

A "chemin de halage", or in German "treidelpfad", which runs alongside the waterway right next to the bed of the river or canal, was an indispensable part of the transport infrastructure in earlier times. Before ships could move using motor power, horses ran along the bank and pulled the ship against the current. This was called "treideln", and this is how the "treidelpfads" got their name, which has been passed down to this day. Where these paths directly on the bank have been preserved, they are often used by hikers and cyclists.

Very pretty gravel path, very rolling during off-peak hours. A little boring over time like most towpaths.

Nice view of the river which takes on a wild aspect at this place. Opposite, you can see the Devil's barn. It is a 12th century building which has had various functions over time. It is part of the Warnavillers farm.

The Château de Messimy is an important part of the private heritage of the department of Ain. Its history is linked to the surveillance of the ford which made it possible to cross the Saône between Messimy (Ain) and Port Rivière (St Georges de Reneins, Rhône). The current keep dates from the 12th century. The south facade, flanked by two towers, one square, the other rectangular, dates from the 15th and 17th centuries. Moats, fed by the river La Mâtre, surrounded the whole. They remain today, but the water has disappeared.

The name of the village of Beauregard says it all - it is simply beautiful to look at. From the old bridge you can also enjoy a great view of the Saône. And don't worry that a car will bother you, because it is only approved for pedestrians and cyclists.

The imposing castle "Château de Fléchères" is now open to the public and can be visited. But that wasn't always the case - the property can look back on a very checkered history. The castle itself dates back to the 17th century, but was built on the walls of an old 12th-century fortified building. First owned by various noble families, it passed into the hands of a gang of Mafiosi from Lyon in the 1970s. Later in the 1980s the castle was almost deserted and partly looted before being listed as a historical monument in 1985.

Beauregard: the very name of the village indicates what it is - a beautiful look, a beautiful view of the Saône, in particular from its old bridge, only authorized for pedestrians and bicycles.

Jean de Sève, squire, lord of Fromentes and Villette, receiver of finances in the generality of Lyon and provost of the merchants of this city (1612-1614) laid the foundations of the current castle, between 1610 and 1616, on the site of 'a fortified house which defended a ford on the Saône, and built the castle in a single campaign of works. In 1820, a landscaped park was created. This will be the last major building site for the castle. In June 1972, the castle became the property of one of the thugs of the Gang des Lyonnais, Johanny Chavel. The latter embarked on major restoration and development work. During the summer of 1972, he organized a grand opening night for his estate, with a sound and light show entrusted to a large Parisian pyrotechnic company. This festival brings together a hundred mobsters and as many police officers at the castle. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Fl%C3%A9ch%C3%A8res But on October 18, 1973, Chavel disappeared. Presumably the victim of an assassination, his body will never be found. On December 19, 1974, around thirty men and women were arrested. Thirteen will be charged. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gang_des_Lyonnais It was not until the end of 1997 and the acquisition of the estate by Marc Simonet-Lenglart and Pierre-Albert Almendros that, from 1998 and for a period of five years, a major campaign to restore the castle and its gardens. The castle is nowadays open to the public. https://chateaudeflecheres.com

Beauregard takes its name from the castle built in 1290 by Gui de Chabeu on a hill overlooking the Saône and the hills of Beaujolais. The castle fell into ruin in about 1735. Restoration began in the 19th century and continues today. A violent fire ravaged a very large part of the village, very few old houses were spared, but it was quickly rebuilt. The restoration of woodwork, goldsmiths and paintings began in the 19th century and continued at the beginning of the 21st century. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beauregard_(Ain)
