Dole was the capital of the Free County of Burgundy under Habsburg rule during the Middle Ages. For centuries, the city served as the seat of parliament and was home to a university. Over the centuries, the city was besieged several times and fought over in conflicts between France and Burgundy, experiencing periods of occupation. The city's inhabitants consistently offered considerable resistance, forcing France to either withdraw or return possession of the city to the Burgundians by treaty. A stroll through the old town reveals numerous picturesque Renaissance buildings.

It's not in Saint Jean de Losne... but in Dole in the Jura 😉 if changing the title is possible...

It is the Doubs, one of the largest tributaries of the Saône.

Louis Pasteur was undoubtedly the person who, through his work, including in Dole, had the greatest influence on today's society, especially in terms of microbiology and thus all kinds of infectious diseases. This is, of course, (rightly) recognized in many places here in the city.

It's amazing how such a bridge arch could survive the many centuries, floods, etc.!

Opposite the ruins of an old Roman bridge, an arch has been reconstructed. Underneath is a fish ladder or a ramp for paddlers(?).

There is a bench here and you can walk down to the river (be careful! When wet, the sloping concrete path is very slippery!) and look at the wide "waterfall" from below.
