12월 26, 2024, Abbaye aux Hommes (Saint-Étienne), Caen
Caen, first mentioned in documents in 1027, experienced rapid urban development in the 11th century. It was called a burgus (bourg), was the centre of an extensive ducal domain, lay at the crossroads of important roads and had markets and a port. It first developed as an important city in the Duchy of Normandy under William the Conqueror. He had a strong fortress built in Caen and around 1059 an abbey for women (Abbaye aux dames) and one for men (Abbaye aux hommes), in which he was also buried. Later, during the Huguenot Wars (1562), his grave was destroyed and his bones were lost. William's gravestone can still be seen in the church today. He had the monasteries built to atone for his marriage to his cousin Mathilde, which was disapproved of by the Pope. Both monasteries are among the most important monuments in Normandy and are today – by the monks and nuns during the French Revolution

The former Benedictine abbey with the monastery church of Saint-Étienne was founded by William the Conqueror in Caen, built from 1060 onwards, but probably not completed until after 1090. From 1120/25 onwards, six-part cross-ribbed vaults were installed in the originally flat-roofed building, which are among the oldest in France.

Kieffer Commando's Monument: In a beautiful park on the coast lies this monument of the No.4 Commando's of Lt.Kieffer, who came ashore in the early morning of June 6, 1944 to neutralize the batteries of Ouistreham. The monument is located on a German 644 bunker that was part of Stützpunkt 08 HKB Riva Bella. The Stützpunkt with 6 pieces of 155mm guns served to defend the entrance of the river Orne and the canal. The Regelbau 644 is a "Stand mit 6-Schartenturm in A". The stones in front of the monument bear the names of the fallen French commandos of June 6, 1944. https://www.tracesofwar.nl/sights/798/Kieffer-Commandos-Monument.htm

10월 11, 2021, Pegasus Bridge
Just after midnight on the night of June 5-6, the two bridges of Ranville-Bénouville were captured by the British 5th Parachute Brigade after a short battle. Pegasus was their emblem. A small part of France was liberated. Major Howard had won the Battle of Pegasus and those in need had a field for gliders to land on, a movable steel bridge, a house on the water's edge, and... the Gondrée family, who at 11 a.m. saw Lord Lovat (1911- 1995) and his 'Green Berets' arrive, to the sound of a bagpipe. Now café-museum Gondrée is a meeting point for veterans and tourists. (Michelin)

The beautiful castle is a good example of neoclassical architecture in France at the end of the 18th century. It is one of the most important works of the Parisian architect Claude-Nicola Ledoux. The courtyard facade has an impressive row of iconic columns, crowned by a entablature with a relief of weapons and figures. The garden side shows the same ionic order, but pilasters below the attic bearing military victory marks. Now the castle is owned by the departmental council and it hosts temporary exhibitions.
