The Regler Church (officially St. Augustine's) is one of Erfurt's most historically significant and artistically valuable churches. It is located slightly away from the cathedral on Bahnhofstraße, near the Anger square, and is particularly famous for two things: its extraordinary altar and its asymmetrical towers. The unusual name "Regler Church" derives from the "Regulated" Augustinian Canons. These monks lived according to a strict rule (Regula), which is why they were colloquially known as "the Reglers." The monastery was founded as early as the 12th century (around 1117/1130). The present church was built between 1130 and 1238 in the Romanesque style, but was rebuilt and enlarged several times in the Gothic style after fires.
