Built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style, the Saint-Laurent-la-Gâtine church is a building with some remarkable features that merits restoration. Saint-Laurent-la-Gâtine is made up of three hamlets, including "Saint-Laurent," which also owes its existence to Coulombs Abbey. It was originally called Saint-Laurent-de-la-Gâtine before taking its current name by contraction. Gâtine, formerly written "gastine," meant uncultivated land or fallow land in Old French. It is in the heart of this ancient hamlet that stands the 12th-century Saint-Laurent church, in the Romanesque style, enlarged and remodeled in the Gothic style in the 16th century. Today, cracks and an imbalance in the bell tower can be seen, linked to earlier modifications to the roof structure. Major work involving the restoration of the building, including work on the roof and masonry, must be carried out in order to preserve the bell tower and its bell, which are protected as historic monuments. Your support is essential to the preservation of this precious heritage.
