The Church of Saint-Aignan owes its name to the Bishop of Orleans around 400, when a pre-Romanesque church stood on the same site. Over the centuries, it was replaced by various other buildings, particularly those destroyed by fire. Saint-Aignan was the parish of the Counts of Blois and Chartres.

Easy and very beautiful hike following the river and pond; however, be careful at the roundabout on the way back to Lucé.

Unfortunately, the church was not accessible when I visited (mid-September 2024). You could only look in through a gate and the dance of death depictions on the left side were not really visible. In front of them were transparencies with skeleton drawings. Maybe those were the depictions...

Unfortunately we couldn't visit the church because there was a local event taking place. Too bad 😏

From the outside the church looks very inconspicuous, but from the inside it reveals all its splendor. The greenish paintings come from Émile Boeswillwald, Inspector General of the Commission of Monuments Historiques from 1860 to 1895. The church's stained glass windows from the early 16th century are particularly noteworthy.
