When it came to power, French kings Philip the Handsome and John the Good were determined to assert their position against the Avignon popes! The royal symbol of power was built in the 1360's on Mont Andaon, which overlooks Villeneuve. The impressive fortress housed permanent barracks, a court of law and a prison, which still contains 18th and 19th century doodles made by prisoners.

The island of Barthelasse is a haven of peace and greenery located between two cities and also between two departments. There are market gardeners, a pretty little forest, a swimming pool, a large campsite, quiet alleys. It is from this island that you will have the best possible view of the city of the Popes and the Saint-Bénezet bridge (better known as the Pont d'Avignon).

It is the famous bridge of Avignon which separated the City of the Popes from that of the bishops. Villeneuve-lès-Avignon is certainly smaller than its big sister Avignon, but it is nonetheless just as rich in architecture. Fort Saint-André is a good example. Stroll through its streets and go from discovery to discovery.

From the Pont Édouard Daladier you have a wonderful view of Avignon's landmark, the Pont Saint Benezet (from the well-known song "Sur Le Pont D'Avignon") as well as the city wall, the silhouette of Avignon with the Pope's palace and when the weather is good View of Mt Ventoux.

Between Orange and Avignon, the ViaRhôna bike route actually is far away from the Rhône river, and not very pleasant near or on the highway. Here is a more rural, river route with views of several castles along the way, on a large island: Set on the Rhône river between Avignon and Villeneuve lès Avignon, Barthelasse Island is a relaxing heaven of peace and greenery just a few minutes walk from these two cities. One of the largest river islands in Europe, it's eight kilometres (5 miles) long and three kilometres (2 miles) wide at its widest point and spans 700 hectares (1,730 acres). Good spot to escape from the tourist crowds. Barack Obama and his family spent part of their summer vacation here in 2019.
