The village houses a castle and an old church. It contains an interesting statue of Saint-Sigismond. The sculptor apparently did not know exactly what this saint looked like and therefore took another French hero as a model; Vercingetorix. The church has a special atmosphere due to its thick walls and small windows.

Larressingle was an important fortress during the Hundred Years' War. At that time, the English had firm control over the area and the village formed the defense of Gascony. Yet the village has never been the scene of battle and that is one of the reasons why it is still completely intact. For us that is an excellent thing because the village is small but it has an abundance of atmosphere.

This small fortified village really has character. Despite its relatively small enclosure, we realize in a very concrete way its undeniable defensive aspect. A fine example of this very special architecture. A few small shops (bars and restaurants) can be found behind its walls if you want to take a break.

Again and again on the pilgrimage route to St. James (Chemin de Saint Jacques) - like here on the stage from Condom to Eauze - valleys have to be crossed and rivers to be crossed. The bridges are sometimes comparatively modern, sometimes medieval and sometimes even older in origin. But always, and this is the main thing, they bring – of course not only, but also us pilgrims – safely to the other side.

The "Saint-Pierre" cathedral in Condom was dedicated to Saint Peter. Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee when he - together with his brother Andrew - was called by Jesus Christ to be "fishers of men". According to Catholic understanding, he is the supreme apostle, and the two millennia-long line of popes - currently Francis - are his successor. On statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted with two keys in his hand; this attribute refers to the biblical saying in Matthew: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Chapter 16, verse 19). Peter and Paul are also known as the “Princes of the Apostles”; their common feast day in the saints’ calendar is June 29th.

Is this small city the namesake of the big Montreal in Canada? In any case, Montréal is a typical Gascon bastide from the 13th century. The Romans already had an oppidum at this point. It was not until the 19th century that the town center and market square were renovated. Some walls of the former city fortifications on the southern side of the city still remain. Montréal has an eventful history: in 1320 the city was incorporated into the English Kingdom. That's why Charles the Terrible besieged the city in 1350. During the Wars of Religion, the Basilica of Montegomery was destroyed and only restored in the 17th century.
