Very pretty setting on the edge of the town's lake. Too bad it's impossible to go around it by bike.

Highest point of Anjou

Old fortified castle originally built in the 11th century by Count Foulques Nerra who was one of the founders of Anjou; he fortified the entire rich province through 27 castles and forts including this one, marking the southern line of its defense. Today listed as a Historic Monument, the building underwent several alterations in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries before being burned during the French Revolution. Purchased and renovated at the beginning of the 19th century, Château de Passavant became an important wine estate recognized among the Côteaux du Layon. The road passes under the access bridge to the castle.

The Étang de Péronne is a nature reserve in the heart of the forest. You can walk around the pond on a 2.4 km trail and admire the century-old oak trees, water lilies and various birds. The lake is home to many protected and endangered species; so be respectful and don't disturb them. You can also explore the surrounding woods, where you may encounter deer, wild boars or even hear the bellowing of a deer. L’Étang de Péronne is a hidden gem that will make you feel closer to nature.

Bellefontaine Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1120. You can admire the ancient architecture and the statue of the Virgin Mary donated by Pope Clement V. You can also explore the surrounding countryside, where you will find orchards, farms and woods. The abbey has a guest house where you can stay for a few days and join the monks in their prayer and work. You can also buy some of their products, such as honey, cheese and books3.
