The commandery was founded in 1120 as a hospital for pilgrims and the poor, under the direction of the Augustinians. A former fortified village, Châteauvillain had many towers, now almost all destroyed. The main curiosity of the city is in a deer park, of more than 270 hectares created in 1655. The city also has a magnificent Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. The Château de Châteauvillain located rue du Duc-de-Vitry, houses a very interesting museum which serves as a place of memory of the town.
