The Fortunio peak is the highest point in the Margeride massif. It is therefore naturally designated as the ideal observation post for Lake Charpal.

In one of the best-preserved parts of the Margeride massif, the Three Sisters pass is said to have been named after the story of three sisters born in the parish of La Panouse, all three of whom were hired as servants in the local barracks. According to the dictionary of the rural world, these barracks refer to old inns located at the start of steep roads. This allowed the wagoners to reinforce their teams before setting off.

Lac de Charpal lies at an altitude of 1,360 meters amidst raised bogs, forests, and heathland. This artificial reservoir, built in the 1930s, supplies Mende with drinking water. Today, it is a tranquil retreat, popular for hiking, nature observation, and its protected flora and fauna.

A dam on the Colagne river created this Charpal lake. It supplies the town of Mende with drinking water. The Charpal site was originally chosen in 1925 to create an underwater munitions depot. This strange project never took place, because the lake was not deep enough and did not allow the immersion of the powder.

In the heart of Margeride, this small village seems austere, but for those who know how to observe, this austerity hides great beauty. Margeride is a harsh country and this is reflected in its very architecture.

This one-of-a-kind European bison reserve invites you to discover an incredible wild animal. European bison are forest bison. Their waists and legs are taller than plains bison. They are perfectly adapted to their living environment, because being thinner, they can sneak between trees. This animal is placid, but it can be dangerous, as it easily charges human beings. This is why carriage rides pulled by draft horses are the only way to see them in this park without taking any risks.

From its height of 1,552m, the Truc de Fortunio dominates the Margeride. The panorama that is offered to you and the granite chaos at its summit offer magnificent photos worthy of a postcard.
