Jean Conquer 🇫🇷🇺🇸

1월 21, 2025, Château de Gisors

A military fortress with a defensive purpose, built in 1097, during the reign of William the Conqueror's second son, Gisors Castle marks a major page in the medieval history of Normandy. This fortification was intended to protect the Norman possessions of the King of England against the ambitions of the King of France. A true border place and eastern lock of Normandy, it was part of a vast campaign of fortifications in the Epte Valley, the natural boundary between the two kingdoms.

We know of Saints Gervais and Protais that they were Christian martyrs in the 2nd century in Milan. At the time, the Roman Empire forced all its subjects to worship the emperor, which was unacceptable to Christians. If they refused, they were crucified or sent to the arena to be devoured by lions between gladiatorial fights. Thus, Saint Ambrose, bishop of Milan, found them, in 386, buried side by side. This great bishop affirmed that they had been martyrs by fidelity to their baptism. He even added "They are of a prodigious size, such as one was in ancient times." Their cult reached Gaul where a large number of churches were dedicated to them.

The parish church of Saint-Gervais Saint-Protais was consecrated in 1119 by Pope Calixtus 11. This Romanesque church saw its nave ravaged by fire in 1123. It was rebuilt in 1160. Thanks to funding from Queen Blanche of Castile, the people of Gisors built a Gothic choir, consecrated in 1249. It was built according to the Chartres model, common at the time in Ile-de-France, with a three-level elevation: large arcades, triforium and high windows pierced with oculi. Thanks to funding from charitable brotherhoods and trade corporations, the church underwent multiple transformations from the end of the 15th century with the addition of radiating chapels and an ambulatory at choir level. Entrusted to the Grappins, a family of architects from Vexin, the work continued in the 15th century with the reconstruction of the nave and the chapels of the side aisles in flamboyant Gothic style, then of the façade decorated with Renaissance motifs.

A transient lies in the Church beside which is the text: 'Whoever you are you will be struck down by death. Stay there, take care, cry. I am what you will be, a pile of ashes. I was what you are. You will be what I am, now do what you wish you had done when you die. Beg, pray for me. '

With a mix of Gothic, Romanesque and Renaissance styles, the Church Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais in Gisor is one of the most beautiful religious buildings in Normandy. Inside, you can find many interesting historical artifacts such as glass roofs, murals, sculptures and paintings. The church was built throughout the Middle Ages, which is why it has such an interesting mix of architectural styles.

7월 5, 2019, Château de Gisors

Dating back to the 11th century, the Chateau de Gisors is an incredible example of military architecture from 11th to the 16th century. It was built as a strategic fortress on the border of the Ducy of Normandy and the French Kingdom and witnessed many conflicts between the kings of England and France. King William II of England originally ordered the castle's construction to protect Normandy from the French crown. The French Ministry of Culture recognises the castle as a historic monument. Today, you can visit the fortress and its grounds. Tickets for adults cost €5. You can find more information, here: http://en.normandie-tourisme.fr/pcu/chateau-de-gisors/

The Priory Saint-Ouen was founded around 1066 by Hugues de Chaumont, who gave the priory to the monastery Marmoutier. Over time, the Franciscans (ordo fratrum minorum recollectorum), the Trinitarian Order and the Ursulines had branches in Gisors. [ Around 1095, the Duke of Normandy and King of England William II (Guillaume II le Roux) built an octagonal donjon to defend the borders. The castle Gisors was one of the numerous border patrols such as Dangu, Château -sur-Epte, Ecos, Baudemont and Gasny along the Norman Epte shore. On the French side lay the castles of Boury-en-Vexin, Saint-Clair-sur-Epte and La-Roche-Guyon. Gisors was the most important border fort in the north of the Norman Vexin. [6] Due to its location, the town played several roles in the 12th Century in the signing of peace treaties between the King of France and the King of England, who was also the Duke of Normandy. Peace of Gisors 1113 Peace of Gisors 1180 Peace of Gisors 1188 Castle ruin Gisors In a field between Gisors and Courcelles on September 28, 1198 a battle between the English king Richard the Lionheart and the French king Philip II took place. Philip II (1165-1223) did not use the old, octagonal donjon, but had a new, circular donjon built, called the Tour du prisonnier ("prisoner's tower"), because a prisoner was there at the time of the Huguenot wars (1562- 1598) has carved numerous reliefs in the walls of his cell. Gisors was converted several times into a Comté or a Duché. At the beginning of the 14th century was the heyday of Gisors. Tanneries and weaving mills of the city led to economic growth. Gisors was the seat of one of the seven major Bailliages of Normandy and seat of a Vicomté.

The castle of Gisors is the ruins of a tower hill castle in the French city of Gisors in the Département Eure, Normandy region, dating back to the 11th century. Their fortified tower (donjon) stands on a moth, a 1097 artificial mound. From 1106 the castle is built, in 1113 it is completed. The castle had a unique strategic location on the border with Normandy, whose dukes from 1066 to 1204 were also kings of England. As the builder of the "Castrum Gisortis" is Robert II de Bellême commissioned by William II of England, It became particularly well-known, because according to the legend the Templerschatz should have been hidden in it, after the French king Philip IV on 13 October 1307 had the leadership of the order arrested. In particular, the Gérard de Sède claimed in his 1963 book The Templars are Among Us. He relies on an imaginative interpretation of a Templar Knight's testimony in the interrogations after their arrest that the day before the arrest high Templars under Gerard de Villers and Hugo of Chalons had left the Paris Templar headquarters with three carts with 50 horses, where he saw the three carts as an encrypted reference to Gisors, which he called the castle of the three cars due to a star constellation at the founding of the castle. They originally wanted to ship the treasure to de Sède (in the port of Eu to de Sède), but would have been hampered by road closures. Gisors was on an old Roman road between Paris and Eu. Further support he saw in the statements of the former gardener and leader of the castle Roger Lhomoy, who in 1946 illegally carried out excavations starting from the old well of the castle
