These are the last stone and brick calcination kilns in Normandy. They were part of the La Ferrière-aux-Etangs iron mine, which was in operation until 1938.

The town has two old market halls dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. While one of them has been closed for renovation into a community hall, the second has remained open and hosts local events and hikers looking for a pleasant spot to picnic and rest.

Marsh Birdwatching

This is not a former crossroads, but the old Le Chatellier railway station. This station was used for loading iron ore from the St Clair mines.

From here you have a beautiful view of the Marais du Grand-Hazé, the largest marshy area in the Orne. It is labeled Sensitive Natural Space and can be visited on foot via a 7 km signposted loop.

At the heart of the Andaine forest is a 12th century hermitage where the monks of Lonlay Abbey have set up a place of prayer. The lake bears the name of this hermitage. It is an oasis of water in a desert of trees.

This is an impressive 18th century covered market. It is an ideal place to take shelter or have a picnic during your hike.

Saint-Aubert-sur-Orne is an old village, founded by the monks of Mont-Saint-Michel. Near the Orne, in front of the ford, they erected a church (around 800 AD) and named their spiritual master, St Aubert, to the land they were beginning to clear. Source: http://www.office-tourisme-putanges.com
