The armistice agreement of World War I was signed here on November 11, 1918 in a clearing in the forest of Compiègne in a railway carriage. In June 1940, France's capitulation to the German Reich was also signed here and in the same carriage. For this purpose, the carriage was brought back here from a museum on Hitler's orders. The original carriage no longer exists, but you can admire an identical carriage here in the museum for a fee. Today you can also find a lot of patriotism and commemoration here.

If you are looking for a nice and easy hike in the Compiègne forest, you can follow in the footsteps of the empresses who resided in the royal and imperial palace. The “In the footsteps of the empresses” trail is a 6.6 km loop which leaves from the Maison Forestière de la Grille des Beaux-Monts and takes you through historical and natural sites, such as the Grand Parc, the belvedere of the Beaux-Monts and the Hameau de la Reine. You will be able to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the forest and learn about the lives and legacies of the women who shaped the history of France.

You have no idea of the importance of the castle until you have stood in front of it: a magnificent complex with a wonderful park. Compiegne had great royal times before the name was much later overshadowed by the armistice in 1918.

Hello, by any chance does anyone from the region know if a route/loop exists from Compiègne via the beautiful mountains to the Château de Pierrefonds and also visiting the forest all that while avoiding as many roads as possible? Thanks a lot :))

Listed as a historical monument since 1994, the Imperial Palace of Compiègne is a former royal and imperial residence. It was built by Louis XV and XVI, then refurbished by Napoleon I and III. The building features a beautiful French neo-classical style.
