Mont César rises to a height of 138 meters on the left bank of the Thérain River, near the hamlet of Froidmont, in the municipality of Bailleul-sur-Thérain, in the Oise department. The hill, which overlooks the valley and surrounding marshes, has been inhabited since the Bronze Age and was likely a Gallo-Roman oppidum on an ancient, fortified Gallic camp. Archaeological excavations carried out since the 18th century have unearthed numerous objects and remains of fortifications. During excavations conducted in 1878 by Isidore Berton, Gallic coins and various objects from the Roman period were discovered. Want to know more? The Monument au 4e régiment de Dragons is a monument in memory of the soldiers of the 4e Régiment des Dragons who died on 22 and 23 May 1940 during the Second World War. The monument is located in Mont-Saint-Éloi, a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. The same regiment fought on Dutch soil in May 1940. On 12 and 13 May they were involved in intense fighting in North Brabant, including at the Moerdijk. They then withdrew via Belgium. The monument commemorates the soldiers who gave their lives for the freedom of their country and is an important reminder of the horrors of war.

The Somme. One of the most thought-provoking areas in Europe. It seem that at almost every turn, there is a cemetery for the fallen of both world wars.

De H elooi founded an abbey on this hill (135m) that dominates the Scarpe Valley in the 7th century. The army of Louis XI camped there in the 15th century during the siege of Arras, as the Prince of Condé did opposite Turenne two centuries later. The battered abbey was rebuilt in the 18th century by Augustinians. But the revolution sold the walls as a national asset and during the world wars (especially in 1915 and 1940) the building was almost completely destroyed. Only the two impressive towers (53m) are still standing.

The Faubourg d'Amiens was already a killing ground when the British relieved the French army in Arras and the surrounding area in 1916. The French cemetery has now disappeared and only soldiers from the Commonwealth countries are buried there, as well as some German prisoners of war. The Memorial commemorates the 35,928 British, New Zealand and South African fighters who fell in this area and whose bodies have not been recovered. Be sure to check out the flying Services memorial in the semi-circular building close to the Pierre du Souvenir. The square column crowned with a globe bears the names of the 991 British air force pilots who died in the First World War.
