The first name John has been widespread since biblical times, and so it should not surprise us to find a whole series of blessed and saints with this name over the two millennia of Christianity. At the threshold from the Old to the New Testament we encounter John the Baptist (also John Baptist), to whom most John churches are dedicated. But one of the four men who wrote the New Testament Gospels also bears this name. This church is dedicated to him, JOHN THE EVANGELIST. A long church tradition has regarded the evangelist as identical with the apostle John mentioned in the Bible, but this is doubted in biblical scholarship. "The Gospel of John exerts a peculiar fascination. It is difficult to escape its solemn, sometimes mystical language. Shrewsbury weir was constructed in 1909. Its function is to keep the water level around the loop of the River Severn that encloses the town centre at a nominal height for pleasure boating and the rowers at Shrewsbury School. It also makes an attractive feature for those out on foot alongside the river. The Weir Cafe, just next to the weir, is open daily.

Friendly, popular pub with lots of outdoor seating - perfect for post run socialising/refuelling. Morning coffee, afternoon tea, lunch and dinner. Food served 0900-1200 daily.

Designed by Shrewsbury architect Sir Edward Haycock in 1848, the Grade II-listed St John the Evangelist Church still retains its original stained glass windows. It's a peaceful spot, situated amid rolling countryside and on the edge of the pretty Shropshire village of Newcastle.

Rising to 409m (1,342 feet), the summit of Hergan affords fine views over the Shropshire Hills and beyond. This is also the point at which the Shropshire Way joins Offa's Dyke, lending itself well to circular runs taking in both trails.

This is one of the prettiest runs in the area, from which ever direction you tackle it. It’s very steep if you run it from the south, whereas it’s more of a slow burner from the north (while still being very steep in parts).
