The most distinctive feature in the design of Celtic crosses is the surrounding circle that connects the crossbars and the vertical beams. This circle is sometimes interpreted as a symbol for the sun; in accordance with this symbolism, Celtic crosses are sometimes also referred to as sun crosses. I strongly advise you to take a guided tour. The guide is fascinating.

From here a path leads to the Château de Montségur, a ruin from the Cathar era. There is a fee to visit, but you can get up to halfway up the climb. It's worth the detour!
