The Minster of St. Mary and St. Mark is the Romanesque former monastery church of Reichenau Monastery and today's Catholic parish church[1] in the Mittelzell district on the island of Reichenau in Lake Constance (Untersee). This minster was the abbey church of the important Benedictine abbey (Latin: Monasterium Augiensis) and is the largest of the three Romanesque churches on the island. On the occasion of the monastery's 1,300th anniversary, Pope Francis elevated the minster to a minor basilica in April 2024. Since 2000, the monastery island of Reichenau, including the minster, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site; in 2003, ten major works of the Reichenau manuscripts were added to the UNESCO Memory of the World Register as "unique documents of cultural history that exemplify the collective memory of humanity." To mark the 1300th anniversary, the Great State Exhibition Baden-Württemberg 2024, entitled "World Heritage of the Middle Ages," presented manuscripts and other relics from the island from April to October 2024 at the Baden-Württemberg State Archaeological Museum in Konstanz on Lake Constance and on Reichenau itself. A citizens' project group created the "Reichenau Book of Solidarity 2024" for Reichenau Minster, a continuation of the Reichenau Book of Brotherhood of 824. In 724, the wandering monk Pirmin founded Reichenau Monastery with the help of the Franconian mayor of the palace, Charles Martel, and the Alemannic Duke Lantfrid. According to a founding charter dated April 25, 724, he brought forty monks with him to the island of Reichenau. The first wooden monastery church was built in 724 under the founding abbot Pirmin. Abbot Haito had a Carolingian basilica built on a cruciform ground plan, parts of which still survive today in the crossing and the east transept. It was consecrated on August 16, 816, in honor of the Virgin Mary. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%BCnster_St._Maria_und_Markus_(Reichenau-Mittelzell)

Decline and dissolution By a decree under Abbot Friedrich von Wartenberg (1427-1453), the monastery, which had been reserved for the high nobility, was also made accessible to the lower nobility. The Reichenau Abbey came to an end with Markus von Knöringen, abbot of the monastery from 1508-1516 and from 1523-1540. It was sold for a fee to the Bishop of Constance, Johann III von Weeze, who was enfeoffed with the imperial fief of the abbey by Charles V. The monastery continued to exist as a priory until it was dissolved in 1757.
