HISTORY, old towns Altstätten was first mentioned in a document in 853 as "villa nominata altsteti" (farm called old site / settlement site). At the time it was first mentioned in documents, the St. Gallen Monastery owned property in Altstätten. In order to secure the territory against the Counts of Montfort, who settled on the right side of the Rhine, Abbot Berchtold von Falkenstein fortified the Altstätten farm with a curtain wall in the 13th century, which made the place a city. In 1298 Altstätten was referred to as "oppidum" (Latin for city). The form “Altstätten” was already found in 1444. Altstätten experienced an economic boom in the 18th century. Energetic families acquired solid wealth through the textile trade. It is thanks to these families that the magnificent baroque buildings and historic arcades were built, which still shape the image of the old town today and are charming contemporary witnesses. With the inauguration of the railway line through the Rhine Valley in 1858, economic life received a further boost. After the First World War, the embroidery industry fell into a serious crisis. The economy as a whole did not recover until after World War II. Today Altstätten is an important business and business location with an impressive variety of industries and jobs in the areas of commerce, industry, commerce, services and the public sector. Altstätten performs a center function and is the location community for various regional institutions. Text / Source: CITY OF ALTSTÄTTEN https://www.altstaetten.ch/geschichtefs
