The Vecchio rises on the Monte d'Oro and is initially called Agnone. This river is best known for its Cascades des Anglais, which attract hundreds of tourists every day in high season. From the hamlet of Vizzavona onwards, the river is called Vecchio and you only meet very few people. Shortly after entering Canaglia, it joins the Manganello. Here the Vecchio valley becomes very lonely. On the right-hand side, far above the riverbed, the railway line winds its way along the hills, barely visible. You don't notice the busy T20, which lies behind the hills. You only see it when you get off at the Ponte Vecchio. High above us, it crosses the Vecchio valley on the new bridge. Later, the Vecchio flows into the Tavignano, which reaches the sea near Aléria.

There are very nice bathing spots along the Manganello.

Short but crisp hike with great views. The waterfalls are a real highlight! We were out and about in cloudy, drizzling weather at the beginning of June and had the walk to ourselves. In the high season it could get crowded. Sturdy footwear required, as it goes over hill and dale. But it is not particularly difficult or strenuous. There is an excursion restaurant by the waterfalls, but it was closed. Otherwise it is definitely a great place to take a break. There is also a climbing park on the last half of the way (if you start at the ruin).

You leave the GR20, but if you want to double and still want to reach Capanelle, you may be able to shorten the route significantly. In bad weather, the decision has to be well thought out, after Capanelle it goes over a ridge that feels right on the edge of the wind. Strong winds and partial visibility below 10 meters are not uncommon when the clouds are sweeping overhead.
