Murten Castle dates back to the time of Count Peter II of Savoy (1255). Under the portal from 1516, which was rebuilt several times and in its current form dates from 1755, there was a cistern that is now only marked in the paving. The large, square tower, the so-called keep or "Luegisland", was used by Adrian von Bubenberg to monitor the events during the battle. While the castle was previously the residence of the mayors or was used as a hospital, barracks and prison, it is now the seat of the senior office of the Fribourg lake district. On the site of the former ossuary of the canton of Fribourg, the latter had the obelisk erected in 1822 to commemorate the Battle of Murten. It is 18 meters high. We can read the inscription “The Republic of Friborg honored here the victory won on June 22, 1476.

In 1822, the canton of Fribourg erected this obelisk as a memorial to the Battle of Murten. In its place there previously stood an ossuary that was destroyed by the French in 1798.
