The Lindwurm Museum is a local history museum in the old town of Stein am Rhein in the canton of Schaffhausen. It showcases bourgeois living and agricultural work around 1850 in its 1500 m² exhibition space. Along with the Chretzeturm Artist in Residence and the Obere Stube cultural center, the Lindwurm Museum is one of the cultural institutions of the Jakob and Emma Windler Foundation. Dendrochronological analysis of the ceiling layers in the basement confirms that the origins of the "Lindwurm" house can be traced back to 1279. Before house numbers existed, houses had names. Lindwurm is an archaic term for dragon. In 1712, the rear building was constructed as a stable and outbuilding. The neoclassical facade of the front building dates from 1819/1820. In 1853, the Gnehm family acquired the Lindwurm house. Robert Gnehm (born 1852 in Stein am Rhein; died 1926 in Zurich), who acquired the "Lindwurm" house around 1900, is the most famous member of the family. He left his fortune, including Sandoz shares and the "Lindwurm" house, to his daughter Marie Gnehm (1883–1944), a trained physician. Siblings Jakob and Emma Windler inherited the house and a portion of the shares from their cousin Marie Gnehm. They are the founders of the "Jakob and Emma Windler Foundation," based in Stein am Rhein. Because Robert Gnehm rarely used the house, at most as a "family vacation home," it has largely retained its 19th-century character, despite being partially rented out. After Jakob and Emma Windler inherited the house, it was renovated in 1947/1948 by the architect Wolfgang Müller. The historic building fabric was not only preserved but also partially supplemented to create a complete impression of the period. The yoke column, round-arched doors, and Renaissance doors in the entrance hall are therefore not in their original locations. The building was converted into a museum in the early 1990s. The concept was developed by the ethnologist Peter Bretscher. It opened in 1993. From 2014 to 2019, the museum director was Elisabeth Schraut, the overall director of the cultural institutions of the Jakob and Emma Windler Foundation.
